After looking at more than 10 years of data, researchers now say children as young as a year old can be reliably screened for amblyopia; by using a camera that takes pictures of the eye, symptoms of the condition can be detected long before it becomes apparent, according to a study published Monday in the journal Pediatrics.

First step in allowing those blinded by a rare retinal disease to see again: Although vision will not be restored to the patients who receive the device, it may provide them with the ability to identify light and dark in the environment, helping them detect the location of people and objects and their movement. Those who have had the device implanted are extremely pleased with the results.
